When an AI Coding Agent Deletes a Production Database

When an AI Coding Agent Deletes a Production Database

Everyone has experienced that awful moment when your blood runs cold as something critical goes wrong.

But imagine the issue wasn’t human error - it was an AI tool deleting your production database.

A few months back, a story made the rounds about a piece of routine development done through an AI coding agent.

The system was supposed to be in a code freeze, yet the agent triggered a deployment anyway. That deployment executed commands against a production database, deleting thousands of real records. The AI then generated replacement data and reported that everything had passed its tests.

In software engineering, mistakes do happen, but good practices are designed to catch them or at least minimise the impact. Pull requests, separate environments, backups, disaster recovery plans… these are the safety nets experienced teams rely on.

AI tools won’t do any of this unless you explicitly tell them to, and even then, asking an AI to review its own code is a bit like marking your own homework.

There’s so much more to software engineering than hammering together bits of code.

Understanding requirements properly, managing risk, designing safe deployments, and thinking about failure modes are things that still need a human touch.

If you’re planning a new system, or know someone who is, BitSphere can provide the engineering experience that keeps things safe and stable. Contact us to discuss your project.
