For a minute I thought a Brazilian football club had decided to open their doors in Berkshire when I saw this picture.
As it turns out this was simply a misspelling of Reading on the pictures used to sell merchandise on Reading FC's official club website, rather than a new club called Readino FC....
This could have happened for a number of reasons, whether that be just a case of not checking for typos or trying to get the product shots ready at short notice for a deadline.
However, looking at the image this has all the hallmarks an AI model generating a picture, determining the output based on probabilities and therefore getting something that looks extremely close to what was intended, but missing critical details that the human eye would have picked up. It is worth pointing out however that there is no hard evidence that an AI mistake is the case, other than that this does resemble a classic AI error.
If this can slip through the "AI makes mistakes" net for something that is obviously wrong just by looking at a picture - as no doubt loads of Reading fans will have pointed out - then how easy would it be for something less visible to get through? If you use AI to put together a piece of software but either don't check the actual code being produced, or don't have the specific technical skills to notice mistakes, then you have very little chance of knowing whether it contains errors.
While the situation with the badge and a hypothetical software issue are two very different situations, the underlying principle remains the same. It is silly to just hammer something together and blindly trust results without ever checking that the output is actually correct, especially if the potential repercussions could be much more critical.
This underlines the need to ensure that the human element of doing anything is still very much a vital part of doing a job right, and that skilled people still have an important role to play when putting together anything of high quality. If you are looking for help with a software project, then that's where BitSphere can provide this extra help or technical expertise rather than relying just on AI.
Of course there is always the alternative that I have got this whole situation wrong and that Reading have actually decided to add some South American flair to the team. Although based on a handful of trips to the Madejski as an away fan this seems unlikely....
